These East Texas stops are part of a multi-day tour through Texas and Louisiana for the San Antonio-stationed Band of the West, one of 11 active-duty Air Force bands. The tour is specifically designed to promote national unity and is named “Steel of Resolve,” a phrase former President George W. Bush used after the attacks to describe American steadfastness.
According to Technical Sgt. Justis MacKenzie, chief of publicity for Air Force bands, the band’s core mission involves performing outreach and ceremonial duties. He explained that these efforts aim to honor current and past service members, inspire future generations to serve, and foster a connection between the American public and the Air Force. MacKenzie highlighted that the 9/11 attacks were a “catalyzing event for a lot of people to serve their nation” and also an “incredible time of national unity.” He noted the importance of this message today, emphasizing that national unity does not require a national tragedy.
Concert attendees can anticipate a program featuring several classic American musical pieces. The planned selections include the overture to “Candide” by Leonard Bernstein, “Adagio for Strings” by Samuel Barber, “Beautiful City” by Steven Schwartz, and “American Soldier” by country star Toby Keith. MacKenzie encourages East Texans to attend these performances, noting they provide an opportunity to acknowledge the courage and sacrifice of military members, first responders, and the ordinary Americans who stepped forward to assist others in the immediate aftermath of the attacks. He described this as an important reminder of national identity and American character.
