Bossart Bark Park, an 8-acre dog park supported by the SPCA of East Texas (SPCA ETX), closed temporarily last Friday, September 11, following the organization's sale of approximately 51 acres of surrounding property. The transaction will result in the permanent closure of two large dog parks north of the facility's main road, while two smaller dog parks and wooded trails will remain under SPCA ETX ownership and undergo renovations before reopening.

The SPCA ETX announced that the sale is a critical step in its ongoing efforts to enhance its financial stability and ensure a sustainable future for animal welfare initiatives across East Texas. The 51 acres of property, which had encompassed much of the park, will be transferred to private ownership once the closing is complete.

Specifically, the two large dog parks located north of the main road within the Bossart Bark Park complex are now permanently closed to the public as they transfer to private hands. However, SPCA ETX will maintain ownership of two small-dog parks situated south of the main road, along with two acres of wooded trails positioned between these parks and the organization’s primary facility at 3245 W. Grande Blvd.

These retained sections—the two small-dog parks—also began a temporary closure on September 11. During this period, SPCA ETX plans to undertake remodeling and improvements to the facility. The organization stated its goal is to provide an enhanced experience for community members and their pets upon reopening. A specific date for the reopening of the newly reconfigured parks has not yet been announced, but the SPCA anticipates it will be "in just a few weeks’ time."

Emily Heglund, executive director of SPCA ETX, expressed enthusiasm for the changes. She noted that the sale "allows us to put these valuable assets to work for the long-term benefit of our organization and the animals we serve, while continuing to preserve Bossart Bark Park as a special place for dogs and their families in our community." Heglund added that the organization knows visitors will be eager to return and looks forward to welcoming them back soon.

SPCA ETX recognizes Bossart Bark Park as a valued resource for local dog owners and has requested the community’s patience and understanding during the improvement period. The organization reiterated its commitment to improving the lives of animals throughout East Texas through its core mission of rescue, adoption, spay/neuter services, education, and community outreach. The land sale is presented as one element of a broader strategy to build a financially sustainable future and maintain focus on these core animal welfare activities.

Further information regarding the reopening of Bossart Bark Park, along with any new policies or specific improvements, will be shared with the public at a later date. For additional details, the SPCA of East Texas can be reached at 903-596-7722 or via email at [email protected].
