Christopher Miller, 57, of Flint, faces a $1,500,000 bond after surrendering to Smith County Sheriff’s deputies following a standoff at his home in the 16000 block of Oakwood on Thursday. The Smith County Sheriff’s Office reported that Miller was booked into the Smith County Jail on three new aggravated assault charges stemming from the incident, in addition to two outstanding warrants for aggravated assault. The standoff concluded when SWAT personnel deployed gas into Miller’s residence, compelling him to exit and surrender without further incident.
According to a release from the Smith County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a 911 call from the 16000 block of Oakwood. The caller reported that their neighbor, identified as Christopher Miller, had entered their property while they were fishing. During this encounter, Miller allegedly threatened the caller with a shotgun. The caller further stated that Miller made direct threats, claiming he would kill both the reporting party and any law enforcement officers who responded to the scene, according to the official release from the sheriff’s office.
Deputies determined that Miller had threatened a total of three individuals with the firearm before he retreated into his home. Following his retreat, deputies made multiple attempts to persuade Miller to exit his residence peacefully, but these efforts were unsuccessful. The prolonged failure to secure Miller’s voluntary surrender led to an escalation of the law enforcement response.
In response to the developing situation, SWAT and crisis negotiators were dispatched to the scene to assist. The sheriff’s office release stated that after repeated negotiation attempts proved unsuccessful in convincing Miller to comply with commands, SWAT made the decision to deploy gas into Miller’s residence. This action was taken to safely resolve the standoff.
Following the deployment of gas, Miller exited his home and surrendered to authorities without further complications. He was immediately evaluated by Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel at the scene to ensure his well-being. After evaluation, Miller was transported to the Smith County Jail, where he was formally booked. His bond for the three new aggravated assault charges resulting from the standoff is set at $1,500,000. Miller remains in custody at the Smith County Jail.
