The board of directors for Habitat for Humanity of Smith County announced Monday evening the appointment of Mike Landess as its new Chief Executive Officer. Landess takes on the leadership role after several years of engagement with the organization, progressing from a volunteer on construction crews to a member of the board, and most recently serving as Chief Development Officer.

Landess retired to Tyler following a career in broadcast journalism that spanned decades as a reporter and anchorman. This background, noted for enhancing his “love of storytelling,” will now be applied to his new role, focusing on communicating the impact and initiatives of Habitat for Humanity of Smith County. His responsibilities will include sharing the stories behind the organization's core homebuilding efforts, its Critical Repair and Brush With Kindness programs, and the ongoing expansion of the ReStore.

His journey with Habitat for Humanity of Smith County began just over six years ago as a construction crew volunteer. From there, he joined the board of directors before being named Chief Development Officer in June. This progression highlights his deep involvement and commitment to the organization's mission within Smith County.

Habitat for Humanity of Smith County works to unite individuals in the effort to build homes, strengthen communities, and cultivate hope. The organization achieves these goals through its programs focused on affordable homeownership, vital Critical Repair services, and the community-focused Brush With Kindness initiative. Additionally, the ReStore contributes to the organization's broader mission. Through these avenues, Habitat collaborates with homeowners, a dedicated network of volunteers, and various community partners to support local residents in building and improving the places they call home across Smith County.

Landess and his wife, Maddie, have established strong connections to East Texas through their family and friends. The couple, who recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary, have five daughters, 11 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

In his capacity as CEO, Landess will collaborate with the organization's staff, its volunteer base, financial donors, and community partners. This collective effort will focus on advancing Smith County Habitat’s work to provide accessible affordable homeownership opportunities, execute crucial home repairs, and foster robust community engagement throughout the region.
