WHITEHOUSE, Texas — Higgins Elementary School in Whitehouse has launched a new volunteer program named “Dudes on Duty,” which brings fathers, grandfathers, and uncles to campus every Thursday morning. The program began this week and is scheduled to continue for the rest of the current school year, according to Principal Crystal Porche.
The idea for “Dudes on Duty” originated from summer discussions between Principal Porche and Dr. Whittle, focusing on strategies to encourage greater parent participation on campus. The primary role for participants in the program is to greet students and open doors as they arrive at school.
Principal Porche noted that while mothers frequently volunteer for classroom activities and parties, the new program was specifically created to offer fathers, grandfathers, and uncles a distinct opportunity to engage with the school community. She explained that the program allows these men to step in and contribute, fostering a sense of belonging within the school environment.
A key aim of the program is to provide positive male figures for children who may not have one in their daily lives. Principal Porche expressed hope that seeing grandfathers, uncles, and other men volunteer will demonstrate to students that there are many supportive adults in their community. She also hopes it inspires children to consider volunteering and giving back to their own communities or future schools when they are older.
Approximately 600 students attend Higgins Elementary, with an estimated 350 to 400 typically arriving via the morning car line. Principal Porche anticipates between five and ten male volunteers will participate each Thursday. The initial days of the program have already seen positive reactions, with Principal Porche observing excited smiles from students, particularly those who were surprised to find their fathers on duty.
Higgins Elementary already has several established volunteer groups, including the Kindness Squad and the Responsibility Alliance, along with student athletes from local high schools and UT Tyler who regularly assist with opening doors for students. The “Dudes on Duty” program complements these existing efforts by specifically expanding opportunities for male family members to be present and involved. The program will continue to welcome volunteers every Thursday for the duration of the school year.
