The No. 6 Tyler Junior College Apache Ladies volleyball team achieved a 3-0 sweep against Wharton County on Tuesday in a Region XIV match at Wagstaff Gymnasium in Tyler. This victory marked the Apache Ladies' ninth consecutive win, significantly boosting their season standing. The team now holds an overall record of 10-6 and remains undefeated in conference play with a 3-0 record. Following the loss, Wharton County, known as the Pioneers, adjusted their overall season record to 9-3 and their conference record to 1-2.

The match served as a highlight of the annual "Meet the Apaches" festival, an event designed to foster community engagement and student spirit. The festival provided free food and games, drawing an enthusiastic crowd that included members of the TJC football, soccer, baseball, softball, and tennis teams, all present to support their fellow athletes. Despite this vibrant atmosphere, the Apache Ladies experienced what their coach described as a slow start to the game. TJC Coach Brandi Goldman acknowledged the team's tendency to begin matches slowly, stating it is "something we will continue to work with." This challenge, she noted, has been present even in practice. Goldman emphasized the need for her team to proactively assert itself rather than waiting to react to the opposing team's actions.

This latest win against Wharton County underscores a remarkable turnaround for the Tyler Junior College volleyball program this season. The team initially struggled, recording a 1-6 start to their campaign. However, since that challenging period, the Apache Ladies have shown significant improvement and consistency, propelling them to their current ranking of sixth in the national NJCAA poll. Their recent run of form includes a notable victory against No. 7 Blinn, inflicting only its second loss of the season, which highlights TJC's competitive rise within the junior college athletic landscape. The consistent string of wins has demonstrated the team’s ability to rally and perform at a high level.

Coach Goldman attributed the successful outcome against Wharton County to a comprehensive team effort, with individual players making critical contributions across the board. In setting, Baylee Hampton was a key playmaker, providing 26 assists during the match. Jaxey Walker also contributed significantly to the offense, adding nine assists. The team's offensive attack was spearheaded by Lucy Schmidt, who led in kills with 14. Mariabella Crouch also delivered a strong performance with eight kills, while Sofia Alcoforado added seven. On the defensive side, Schmidt proved to be a versatile player, leading the team in digs with 10. Natalia Roszewski also played a crucial role defensively, contributing eight digs to help secure the sweep.

Looking ahead, the Tyler Junior College Apache Ladies are set to return to action on Thursday, when they will host Hill College in a non-conference match. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Wagstaff Gymnasium. Their next conference competition will take place on September 22, with Panola visiting Wagstaff Gym for an anticipated league match. Meanwhile, the Wharton County Pioneers will also be on the road Thursday, traveling to Carthage for a 4 p.m. match against Panola.
