Tyler Junior College (TJC) has received a state workforce grant totaling $325,293 dedicated to enhancing its Veterinary Technology program. This funding is specifically allocated for the purchase and installation of new veterinary medical training equipment. The investment is projected to initially support the training of 27 students, preparing them for high-demand careers within the animal health care field.
TJC President and CEO Dr. Juan E. Mejia stated that the grant reflects the college’s ongoing commitment to workforce education and its dedication to meeting regional industry needs. He added that the investment enables TJC to offer students advanced training, preparing them for meaningful careers as veterinary technicians within animal healthcare. Governor Greg Abbott emphasized that such grants provide East Texas students with the real-world training and technical education necessary for successful careers. Dr. Mejia expressed gratitude to the Texas Workforce Commission and the state of Texas for supporting programs that bolster the East Texas workforce and create gainful employment opportunities for graduates.
The grant was recognized at a ceremony that also highlighted several other East Texas schools receiving Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) grants. Among these were Hawkins ISD, which secured a $334,330 grant to train 20 students as emergency medical technicians in partnership with TJC. Mineola ISD also received $274,989 to train 165 students as automotive service technicians and mechanics, in collaboration with TJC. Additional JET grant recipients included Central Heights ISD, Frankston ISD, Kemp ISD, Kilgore College, Martinsville ISD, and Northeast Texas Community College.
TJC continues to prepare students for high-demand careers through hands-on training, industry-relevant experience, and workforce-focused education. This includes programs such as Veterinary Technology, Automotive Technology, and Emergency Medical Service Professions, which support employers across East Texas and beyond.
