The Commission on Colleges and Universities, which certifies academic excellence for higher learning institutions, has launched a new brand identity. The change aims to reflect the commission's growth as a national and international accreditor. Dr. Juan E. Mejia, President and CEO of Tyler Junior College (TJC), and Dr. J. Blair Blackburn, President of East Texas Baptist University and a TJC alumnus, both serve as delegates on the commission’s board and supported the rebranding decision.

According to Dr. Stephen L. Pruitt, president of The Commission on Colleges and Universities, the new identity "reflects who we are today and where higher education is going." Dr. Pruitt stated that the change better reflects the scope of the commission's work, the institutions it serves, and its vision for the future. Dr. Mejia added that as the commission expands from its previous role as a regional body, the new name echoes its widespread recognition and credibility to certify academic excellence.

Dr. Mejia represents TJC and East Texas on the commission’s board. He expressed honor in serving with Dr. Blackburn on the important work of accreditation for institutions of higher learning. Both Dr. Mejia and Dr. Blackburn represent East Texas and the state on the commission's board.

Despite the branding change, the commission’s accreditation authority and responsibilities remain unchanged. The accreditation status of member colleges and universities also remains the same. During the transition, references to SACSCOC may continue to appear as systems and resources are updated.

Dr. Mejia, committed to upholding strict standards for higher education, led TJC through a rigorous process to reaffirm its accreditation in 2021. During this reaffirmation, Tyler Junior College met or exceeded all accreditation standards, allowing the college to maintain its accreditation until 2031. Dr. Mejia emphasized TJC's belief in and wholehearted support for the accreditation process, committing to remain in good standing.
