The Commission on Colleges and Universities, the accrediting body for institutions like Tyler Junior College, has unveiled a new brand identity to align with its expanded national and international responsibilities. The decision to update the organization's branding was supported by Tyler Junior College President and CEO, Dr. Juan E. Mejia, and East Texas Baptist University President Dr. J. Blair Blackburn, both of whom serve as delegates on the commission’s board.

The commission’s new identity is intended to highlight its growth as an accreditor with a broader scope beyond its previous regional role. Dr. Stephen L. Pruitt, president of The Commission on Colleges and Universities, stated that the change is intended to "better reflect the scope of our work" and the vision for the future of higher education. Dr. Mejia affirmed that the new name resonates with the organization's "nationwide authority, and worldwide credibility."

Despite the change in branding, the commission’s fundamental accreditation authority and responsibilities remain consistent. The accreditation status of its member colleges and universities is also unchanged. During the transition phase, references to the commission's former name, SACSCOC, may still appear as various systems and resources are updated.

Dr. Mejia, representing TJC and East Texas on the commission’s board, expressed honor in his role and in serving alongside Dr. Blackburn on this important work concerning higher learning accreditation. His commitment to upholding strict standards for higher education was demonstrated when he guided Tyler Junior College through a rigorous reaffirmation of its accreditation in 2021.

During that reaffirmation process, TJC successfully met or exceeded all accreditation standards, securing its accreditation until 2031. Dr. Mejia described the reaffirmation of accreditation as a significant achievement for any institution of higher learning, stating that the college "believe[s] and support[s] wholeheartedly the accreditation process and commit[s] to doing all possible to remain in good standing."

The commission will continue its work under its new identity, with local delegates like Dr. Mejia and Dr. Blackburn maintaining their roles in overseeing the standards for higher education institutions.
