The Commission on Colleges and Universities, the accrediting body for Tyler Junior College and other higher education institutions across the South, has adopted a new identity to emphasize its expanded role as a national and international authority. This rebranding, which does not alter the commission's accreditation authority or responsibilities, was supported by local East Texas leaders serving on its governing board.

Dr. Juan E. Mejia, President and CEO of Tyler Junior College, and Dr. J. Blair Blackburn, President of East Texas Baptist University and a TJC alumnus, both serve as delegates on the commission’s board. In these roles, they represent East Texas and the broader state, and both leaders supported the decision to change the organization’s branding.

Dr. Mejia explained that as the commission expands from its previous role as a regional body, the new identity "echoes the widespread recognition of its nationwide authority." He expressed his honor to represent TJC and East Texas on the commission’s board, and to serve with Dr. Blackburn on this important work regarding accreditation for institutions of higher learning.

Dr. Stephen L. Pruitt, president of The Commission on Colleges and Universities, said the new identity reflects "who we are today and where higher education is going." Pruitt added that the change better reflects the scope of their work, the institutions they serve, and their vision for the future.

Despite the new branding, the commission's accreditation authority and its responsibilities remain unchanged. The accreditation status of its member colleges and universities also remains the same. During a transitional period, references to the commission under its former acronym, SACSCOC, may continue to appear as various systems and resources are updated.

Tyler Junior College itself recently completed a rigorous reaffirmation of its accreditation in 2021 under Dr. Mejia's leadership. During this process, the college met or exceeded all established accreditation standards, securing its accreditation status through 2031. Dr. Mejia underscored the significance of this milestone for any institution of higher learning, stating that TJC wholeheartedly supports the accreditation process and is committed to remaining in good standing.

Tyler Junior College, founded in 1926, is a comprehensive public community college located in East Texas. It offers a wide array of programs, including bachelor’s degrees, associate degrees, certificates, and workforce or vocational training. The college provides more than 135 programs of study across various fields, such as arts, sciences, health professions, business, technology, and trades, serving both traditional students and adult learners.

Annually, TJC serves almost 20,000 students across its credit and non-credit programs, with over 16,000 enrolled in credit programs and nearly 4,000 in continuing studies. The institution’s 145-acre central campus and multiple satellite sites feature robust academics, a successful athletic program with 70 national championships, acclaimed fine and performing arts programs, modern residential facilities, and numerous organizations and clubs designed to promote student engagement and diversity.

The commission’s new brand aims to align its public image with its growing influence and broader reach in higher education. Its core mission of upholding strict standards for academic excellence continues unchanged.
