East Texans have a variety of community events, entertainment, and shopping opportunities available this weekend across Smith County and the broader Piney Woods region. While temperatures are forecast to reach the upper 90s, extreme heat alerts are not expected to be in effect.
In Tyler, a 5k run/walk for International Overdose Awareness Day will begin Saturday at 8 a.m. at Southside Park, 455 Shiloh Road. Hosted by Dr. Ash Wellness Club, the event aims to raise awareness and will use proceeds to improve community access to life-saving resources. Participants are encouraged to wear purple, and a registration fee is required. Also in Tyler, the Rose Garden Center at 420 Rose Park Drive will host a children's and maternity consignment sale from Thursday through Sunday. Admission is free on Saturday and Sunday, though a fee is required Friday. The sale features gently used children's items and maternity clothing. Tyler also has farmers' markets on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at 221 South Broadway Avenue and from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. behind Broadway Square Mall.
Longview will host two key events. A car, bike, and truck show benefiting the Rylan Strong Network, which supports families with children battling childhood cancer, will take place Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1123 Jaycee Drive. This event includes live music, vendors, a live auction, and food. Attendance is free, but there is a registration fee for car show participants, and donations are accepted. On Sunday at 7 p.m., Top 40 recording artist Andy Grammer will perform at the Belcher Center, 2100 South Mobberly Avenue. This is a ticketed event. Longview also offers a farmers' market on Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at 105 West Cotton Street.
Lufkin's Pitser Garrison Convention Center, 601 North 2nd Street, will host the Piney Woods Comic Con throughout Saturday and Sunday. This pop culture convention features vendors, celebrity photo and autograph opportunities, and extensive tabletop gaming, including boardgames, trading card games, and role-playing games. Attendees can also compete in video game tournaments, enjoy free play, and participate in a cosplay stage walk for prizes.
Additional community markets include the Winnsboro farmers' market on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at 111 East Carnegie Street, and the Palestine farmers' market on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 813 West Spring Street. These markets provide opportunities to support East Texas farmers and shop for local produce and homemade goods.
