East Texas is experiencing its first significant cool-down of the fall season, coinciding with a busy weekend of major festivals and local events. Temperatures are projected to drop from the low 90s experienced earlier in the week to around 70 degrees on Saturday. The weekend forecast includes no chance of rain, offering clear skies for outdoor activities.
Among the principal events underway this weekend are the 89th annual Yamboree in Gilmer and the 93rd Texas Rose Festival in Tyler.
The Yamboree festivities began Wednesday, October 14, and continue through Saturday at various venues across Gilmer. Highlights include the Queen's Coronation, a quilt show, and a livestock show. The carnival, located in downtown Gilmer, is open Wednesday through Saturday, offering rides, games, food, and street dances each evening.
In Tyler, known as the rose capital, the 93rd Texas Rose Festival runs from Thursday through Sunday. This event features the queen's coronation, a Rose Parade, an arts and crafts and quilting fair, and a variety of social activities. Additionally, the Rose Festival Arts & Crafts Fair takes place Saturday and Sunday at Bergfeld Park, located at 1501 S Broadway Ave. This fair will host over 90 artisan booths showcasing handcrafted goods, alongside live entertainment from local performers and food trucks. Admission to the Arts & Crafts Fair is free.
High school football is also a focal point Friday night, with several teams looking to extend perfect seasons. The Grand Saline Indians, Lindale Eagles, and Athens Hornets are among those aiming to maintain their unbeaten records. A significant matchup on Friday will see the Winnsboro Red Raiders (6-0) face off against the Malakoff Tigers (7-0), ensuring at least one unbeaten team will record its first loss of the season.
Beyond the major festivals, numerous other events are scheduled across the region:
In Lindale, a wine tasting event is set for Friday and Saturday at Picker's Pavilion at Blackberry Square, offering a selection of East Texas wines, live music, food, and shopping.
Jefferson will host the Texas Bigfoot Conference on Friday and Saturday at 200 S Walcott. This ticketed event includes speaking guests, videos, investigation details, and a special dinner.
Longview will be particularly active with several events on Saturday. Heritage Plaza in downtown Longview will host a Cars, Trucks, and Motorcycles Show. While there is a registration fee to participate, attending the show is free and will feature food trucks and door prizes. There is a registration fee to participate in the run.
Later in Longview, from 12 PM to 4 PM on Saturday at 100 Grand Blvd, the East Texas Brewers Guild will present its 10th Annual Homebrew Festival: "Hopocalypse Now." The event will feature craft fermentations of beer, wine, cider, and mead from local homebrewers and area breweries, along with a Steinholding Championship that serves as a qualifier venue for the 2026 Texas Steinholding State Championship Finals. Food vendors, artisan shops, and music will also be part of the afternoon.
Bullard will continue its fall tradition with the Bluebonnet Festival on Saturday at 9 AM at 1426 S Houston St. This free event offers local vendors, a chili cook-off, food trucks, a car show, and bluegrass music.
