Tyler Junior College (TJC) has reported its largest fall student enrollment, reaching a total of 13,147 students. This figure surpasses the college's previous fall record by nearly 3%, coinciding with TJC's 100th anniversary.
Dr. Juan E. Mejia, TJC president and CEO, attributed the milestone to the commitment of community leaders. Dr. Mejia described the enrollment as "a powerful reflection of that synergy" in working together to provide access and promote educational success. The student body is diverse, with ages ranging from 13 to 88 years old, coming from various backgrounds and stages of life, each with distinct goals, according to Dr. Mejia. Some students are preparing for university transfer, others are acquiring skills for new careers, and some are pursuing educational opportunities they may have previously considered out of reach.
Tyler Junior College offers an array of academic and workforce programs, including bachelor’s degrees, associate degrees, certificates, and workforce or vocational training. The institution provides nearly 140 programs of study across fields such as arts, sciences, health professions, business, technology, and trades. Coursework is made accessible through locations in Tyler, Lindale, Jacksonville, and Rusk, alongside online and hybrid learning options. The college also provides services and support designed to help students succeed both inside and outside the classroom.
TJC's roots trace back to September 17, 1926, when it officially opened its doors with 93 students and nine faculty members. At that time, the city of Tyler's population had not yet reached 17,000 residents, yet local leaders recognized the need for higher education close to home and acted to establish the college.
Beyond its fall enrollment, TJC serves almost 21,000 students annually across both credit and non-credit programs. This includes more than 19,000 students enrolled in credit programs and nearly 4,000 in continuing studies. The college strives to offer an educational experience that prepares students for success in their chosen careers and communities.
The main campus spans 145 acres and is complemented by multiple additional sites. TJC is also known for its 70 national athletic championships, fine and performing arts programs, modern residential facilities, and a variety of organizations and clubs that foster student engagement and diversity. Dr. Mejia has expressed confidence in the college's future, stating that the success of East Texas and TJC have always been deeply connected, and that the prosperity of students contributes to the prosperity of communities.
The college continues its mission of providing comprehensive higher education, focusing on student success and community impact.
