Tyler Animal Services is waiving all dog and cat adoption fees during the month of September for individuals who contribute 10 jars of peanut butter. This initiative supports the annual Spread the Love Peanut Butter Drive, a community-wide effort coordinated with the East Texas Food Bank to address hunger. The drive includes a friendly competition between the cities of Tyler and Longview to collect the most donations.
To take advantage of this no-cost adoption opportunity, residents must visit Tyler Animal Services at 4218 Chandler Highway and bring 10 jars of peanut butter. The collected peanut butter will be transferred directly to the East Texas Food Bank, where it will count towards Tyler's total in the inter-city competition. While dogs are known to enjoy peanut butter, all donations are intended for human consumption through the food bank's programs.
Standard adoption fees at Tyler Animal Services are $120 for dogs and $80 for cats. These fees typically cover essential services for adopted animals, including spaying or neutering, microchipping for identification and safety, and ensuring all animals are current on their required vaccinations. By donating peanut butter, adopters can secure these services and welcome a new pet into their home without incurring these costs, making pet ownership more accessible for residents.
Currently, Tyler Animal Services is caring for approximately two dozen dogs and nearly a dozen cats that are available for adoption. The animals represent a range of ages and sizes, with puppies as young as a couple of months old up to dogs as old as 7 years. For cats, kittens as young as 2 months are available, alongside adult cats up to 2 years old. While these animals receive comprehensive care and shelter at the facility, the goal of the adoption drive is to find them permanent homes where they can receive individual love and attention.
Pet ownership is a significant responsibility that can offer considerable rewards. Dog owners can anticipate enthusiastic greetings and wagging tails upon returning home, while cat owners may find comfort in a "ball of fur as they love up on you." The Spread the Love adoption event offers a dual benefit: providing homes for local animals in need and contributing to food security for East Texas residents. Individuals interested in adopting and supporting the peanut butter drive are encouraged to purchase 10 jars of peanut butter and visit Tyler Animal Services throughout September to meet the available dogs and cats.
