Students, staff, and community members gathered at Dr. Bryan C. Jack Elementary School on Friday for the annual Patriot Day ceremony. The event, held around the campus flagpole, honored all patriots, first responders, and the school’s namesake, Dr. Bryan C. Jack.

The student-led ceremony commenced with the Pledge of Allegiance to both the American and Texas flags. City of Tyler Mayor Stuart Hene delivered remarks during the gathering. The Jack Elementary Choir performed the National Anthem, and the ceremony concluded with a moving tribute of “Taps” by a student from the Tyler Legacy High School Red Raider Band.

Superintendent Dr. Marty Crawford highlighted the significance of the event, stating it was an "opportunity to honor the lives lost" on September 11 and those who answered the call to serve. Dr. Crawford expressed gratitude for the freedom to gather for such an event and for a community that consistently prioritizes it. He noted that Dr. Jack’s service to the country provides students a personal connection to this history, reminding them of their own responsibility to serve others.

Principal Katie Jiral of Jack Elementary emphasized the school’s commitment to ensuring students understand the individual behind their school's name. She explained that the annual tradition brings families and neighbors together to honor Dr. Bryan C. Jack, helping students comprehend the pride and responsibility associated with being a Jack Patriot.

Dr. Bryan C. Jack was aboard the plane that crashed into the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. His career included more than two decades of service in Washington, D.C., where he contributed to shaping the U.S. military’s budget. Jack’s ties to the Tyler community run deep; he was a graduate of Tyler ISD and the son of two educators who also worked for the district.

When a new elementary campus opened in 2007, it was named in Dr. Jack’s honor. Jack Elementary has since carried forward this tribute through its annual Patriot Day ceremony, which also reflects the school’s Patriot mascot and its distinctive red, white, and blue school colors. The ceremony specifically honors Jack’s legacy and the lives lost during the events of September 11. The annual observance reinforces the school's dedication to its namesake and the broader themes of patriotism and service within the community.
