Tyler High will open District 7-5A Division I play on Friday, September 18, 2026, traveling to Mesquite to face the West Mesquite Wranglers. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Mesquite Memorial Stadium. Both teams enter the district opener with a 2-1 season record, and preseason predictions have identified this matchup as potentially between the league's top two teams.
Four-star wide receiver Trey Haralson is expected to play a key role in the district opener. Haralson, who has committed to SMU, returned to extensive action last week after recovering from a knee injury suffered during the 2025 bi-district playoffs against Cedar Park. In last week's 38-21 loss to Highland Park, Haralson caught three passes for 30 yards. He previously saw some action, primarily running routes and blocking, in the Lions’ 62-42 win over Tyler Legacy in Week 2. Haralson expressed that it "felt good to be back out there" with his teammates.
The West Mesquite Wranglers arrive at the game having defeated Texas High 31-14 last week in Texarkana. Tyler Coach Rashaun Woods acknowledged the challenge posed by the Wranglers, stating they "run the football" and junior quarterback Jaden Bailey effectively makes plays. Woods described West Mesquite's defense as a "very physical team" that tends to "load the box on you and play man-to-man." He anticipates his team will rebound from the non-district loss to Highland Park. The Wranglers may be without Raykell Ford, who was injured against the Scots; sophomore Jacob Harper would likely start at quarterback if Ford is unavailable.
Historically, the Lions have a strong record against the Wranglers, leading the all-time series 6-0. In the recent game against Highland Park, several Lions earned recognition for their performances. Senior running back CaDarius McMiller led the offense with 122 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. Junior wide receiver Kayden Walker contributed a 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, also earning the Whataburger Play of the Game honor. Defensively, senior linebacker Ken’Drelyn Quinsey recorded 10 tackles, while sophomore defensive lineman Julius Johnson had 7 tackles, including 4 solo, and 3 quarterback hurries.
Looking ahead, Tyler High will host its homecoming celebration on Friday, September 25, when the Lions face Dallas W.T. White. The game is set for 7 p.m. at CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium on Earl Campbell Field. During the homecoming event, former Lion placekicker and soccer standout Nico Hernandez is scheduled for induction into the Tyler ISD Athletics Hall of Fame. Additionally, the Lady Lions volleyball team will host Hallsville on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
