Tyler ISD recognized its Child Nutrition Services employees, students, and families during National School Lunch Week, which was observed from Oct. 12 to 16. The district highlighted the significant role school meals play in supporting students' learning and well-being across Tyler. Annually, Tyler ISD’s Child Nutrition Services program serves approximately two million lunches and 50,000 gallons of milk to students.
On an average school day, the district’s Child Nutrition Services provides about 10,800 lunches and 5,800 breakfasts. These meals are crucial in helping students begin their day ready to learn and remain nourished throughout school hours. The national recognition week, themed “Cafeteria Circus,” drew attention to the creativity, teamwork, and dedication involved in providing these daily school meals. Victor Olivares, director of food services for Tyler ISD, stated that "School meals are about so much more than what is on the tray." The week-long celebration provided an opportunity to acknowledge the Child Nutrition team and their essential contribution to students' daily growth and success.
A dedicated team of approximately 160 Child Nutrition employees works daily to prepare, serve, and deliver meals to students throughout Tyler ISD. With about 62% of students participating in the school lunch program, these meals are an important component of the daily student experience within the district. National School Lunch Week was established in 1962 to underscore the importance of school lunch programs and their comprehensive support for students.
Student preferences significantly influence Tyler ISD’s menus, according to Olivares. Popular meals, such as Nacho Day, remain on the menu, while less favored options are updated or replaced based on student feedback. Olivares noted that the Child Nutrition team "take[s] great pride in serving meals that students enjoy," emphasizing that employees provide students with the necessary fuel to learn, grow, and maximize their school day.
Breakfast is available at no cost to all students across Tyler ISD, ensuring a nutritious start for every student. Lunch is also free for all elementary students, as well as for middle school students enrolled at the Birdwell, Caldwell, and Boulter campuses. Families who may be eligible for free or reduced-price school meals are encouraged to complete a meal benefits application. This application not only determines eligibility for free or reduced-price lunches but may also unlock access to other benefits for qualifying families. The district continues to emphasize the availability of these applications to ensure all eligible students receive the support they need.
