Tyler Junior College has achieved its largest fall student enrollment in history, welcoming 13,147 students as it celebrates its 100th anniversary. This record breaks the institution's previous fall enrollment high by nearly three percent.
Dr. Juan E. Mejia, TJC president and CEO, noted that the significant student count coincides with the college's sustained commitment to providing accessible and high-quality education and training across East Texas. He emphasized that the historic enrollment is a "powerful reflection of that synergy" between leaders working together to create access and promote success through education.
The diverse student body at TJC includes individuals ranging in age from 13 to 88. These students come from varied backgrounds, are at different stages of life, and pursue distinct goals. Some students are preparing to transfer to universities, while others are developing skills for new careers or pursuing an education they may have previously considered unattainable. Dr. Mejia highlighted that students at TJC find comprehensive collegiate experiences, world-class academic and workforce programs, and dedicated support for their success.
TJC offers a wide array of programs designed to meet these diverse needs, including bachelor's degrees, associate degrees, certificates, and both workforce and continuing education courses. The college provides nearly 140 programs of study spanning arts, sciences, health professions, business, technology, and trades, serving both traditional students and adult learners. Convenient access to coursework is available at locations in Tyler, Lindale, Jacksonville, and Rusk, alongside online and hybrid learning options.
The institution's roots trace back to September 17, 1926, when it officially opened with an initial enrollment of 93 students and nine faculty members. At that time, the city of Tyler's population had not yet reached 17,000 residents, yet local leaders recognized and addressed the community's need for nearby higher education, quickly initiating plans for the college's establishment. TJC's founding leaders in 1926 could only have envisioned the century of premier higher education the institution would provide.
Today, Tyler Junior College serves almost 21,000 students annually across its credit and non-credit programs, with more than 19,000 enrolled in credit programs and nearly 4,000 in continuing studies. The college’s central campus spans 145 acres and is complemented by multiple additional sites. It features rigorous academics, 70 national athletic championships, distinguished fine and performing arts programs, modern residential facilities, and various organizations and clubs aimed at promoting student engagement and diversity.
Dr. Mejia expressed optimism for the future, stating that the success of East Texas and the college remain deeply connected. He added that when students thrive, communities thrive, underscoring that the current period is an exciting time for both the college and the region.
