Tyler Junior College will celebrate its 100th anniversary Homecoming from October 19-24, with a week of events themed "Soaring Through the Decades." The festivities, open to alumni, students, and community members, honor a century of TJC's presence in East Texas and include cherished traditions and the debut of a new ceremony.
A central tradition, known as "the drumbeat," will begin on Monday, October 19. Supporters from across the campus, including students, faculty, and staff, will volunteer to keep a drum beating around the clock for an entire week, aiming to bring good luck before the football game on Saturday. This rhythmic event is a highlight for many connected to the college.
Thursday, October 22, will feature a series of public events, including a homecoming parade, a pep rally, and a block party. A fireworks show will immediately follow the block party, adding to the evening's celebration. Other activities throughout the week include a Homecoming Kickoff, spirit wall painting, the Campus Capers talent show, and a dance.
A new tradition will be introduced on Friday, October 23, with TJC hosting its inaugural Ringing Ceremony. This event will allow students and alumni to receive their class rings and mark their connection to the college. On Saturday, October 24, alumni are invited to a tailgate gathering before the TJC Apaches football team plays New Mexico Military Institute at 1 p.m. The game will take place at Christus Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium.
TJC Alumni Director Miranda Sewell stated that this year's Homecoming "carries great significance as we celebrate our Centennial," inviting alumni and community members from every decade to return to campus and reconnect with fellow Apaches. She encouraged them to help celebrate the memories of the past 100 years. The "Soaring Through the Decades" theme, inspired by TJC's mascot, Harry the Hawk, recognizes a century of achievements since the college's founding in 1926 and highlights ten decades of milestones.
