Tyler Junior College has received a $325,293 state workforce grant to enhance its Veterinary Technology program. The funding is designated for the purchase and installation of new veterinary medical training equipment, aiming to initially support training for 27 students preparing for careers in animal health care.
Dr. Juan E. Mejia, TJC President and CEO, stated that the grant reflects the college’s ongoing commitment to workforce education and its efforts to meet regional industry needs. He noted that the investment will enable TJC to provide students with advanced training, specifically for veterinary technicians, and expressed gratitude to the Texas Workforce Commission and the state of Texas for supporting programs that strengthen the East Texas workforce and create employment opportunities for graduates.
Governor Greg Abbott commented on the grants, saying they provide East Texas students with the training and technical education needed for successful careers, asserting that the future of the state is in good hands due to the education provided to young Texans today.
The grant presentation ceremony also recognized other East Texas schools that received Job Education and Training (JET) grants. Hawkins ISD was awarded $334,330 to train 20 students as emergency medical technicians, in partnership with TJC. Mineola ISD received $274,989 to train 165 students as automotive service technicians and mechanics, also in collaboration with TJC. Additional JET grant recipients included Central Heights ISD, Frankston ISD, Kemp ISD, Kilgore College, Martinsville ISD, and Northeast Texas Community College.
Tyler Junior College continues to prepare students for high-demand careers through hands-on training, industry-relevant experience, and workforce-focused education. This includes programs like Veterinary Technology, Automotive Technology, and Emergency Medical Service Professions, which support employers across East Texas and beyond.
Founded in 1926, Tyler Junior College is currently celebrating its Centennial year as a comprehensive public community college located in East Texas. TJC offers a wide range of programs, including bachelor’s degrees, associate’s degrees, certificates, and workforce or vocational training. The college provides more than 135 programs of study in areas such as arts, sciences, health professions, business, technology, and trades. TJC serves almost 20,000 students annually across its credit and non-credit programs, with over 16,000 enrolled in credit programs and nearly 4,000 in continuing studies. The college’s 145-acre central campus and multiple sites feature rigorous academics, athletic championships, fine and performing arts programs, residential facilities, and various student organizations.
