Tyler’s restaurant landscape is currently undergoing significant transformation, marked by a series of recent closures and a steady influx of new openings and expansions. These shifts are reshaping the local dining options for residents in Tyler and surrounding East Texas communities, prompting reflection on past culinary favorites and anticipation for upcoming ventures.
Among the notable closures, On The Border, a Mexican restaurant once recognized for its fajitas and margaritas, has ceased operations in Tyler. This local closure aligns with the shutdown of the entire chain, impacting the Mexican dining segment in the city. Another long-standing establishment, Spring Creek Barbecue, located on South Broadway, has also closed. This location was frequently busy, especially on Sundays after church, partly due to its offering of free scoops of Blue Bell Ice Cream as a dessert, a feature that resonated with many patrons.
More recently, the Mexican-Chinese buffet concept, ElChino, closed its doors after only a few months of operation, demonstrating a rapid turnover in the local market. The closure occurred within the last month. Additionally, the Wendy's restaurant situated on the loop and Highway 155 experienced a sudden closure, though observations suggest that many in the community had anticipated this development.
Despite these departures, Tyler's dining scene is also expanding with several new and returning options. Roost, a popular choice for chicken salad, is preparing to open an additional location in Tyler. This new establishment will be situated at the former site of the Corner Bakery Cafe on Troup Highway, broadening its reach to more residents. Great Harvest Bread is also slated to open another location in Tyler, just a short distance away in the Green Acres Shopping Center, further enhancing local bakery choices.
In the realm of Mexican cuisine, Aztec Mexican is set to inaugurate its second location. This new restaurant will be found on South Broadway at Troup Highway, near the Stein Mart building, offering another option for diners in that area. Meanwhile, Korean 88 BBQ, located on the loop in Tyler, has recently reopened to customers following an extensive remodel, indicating a refreshed return for an existing establishment.
A new entry to the market, Pizza Ranch, will introduce a pizza buffet and game room concept to the French Quarter. This establishment is scheduled to open on Monday, September 21, providing a new family-friendly dining and entertainment option.
The changes in Tyler’s restaurant sector are part of a broader commercial expansion across the city. On the west side of town, construction is currently underway for a new Brookshire's grocery store and an Academy Sports + Outdoors, signaling growth in retail services. Further south along Broadway, a BJ’s Wholesale Club is also being constructed, adding another large-scale retail option for residents. Beyond dining and traditional retail, mini-golf is set to return to Tyler with the opening of The Yard, which will be located on the site of the former Woodcreek Athletic Club, diversifying local entertainment offerings.
These ongoing developments highlight a dynamic period for Tyler's commercial landscape. Residents have expressed significant interest in these changes, with social media discussions focusing on which nostalgic restaurant favorites they would most like to see make a return to the city, underscoring the community's engagement with its evolving local businesses.
