Longview, Texas, residents recently participated in the second annual Community Recycling Event, hosted by Keep Longview Beautiful, to dispose of items not typically accepted in standard recycling programs. Drivers lined up early with carloads of materials, including hard-to-recycle items such as oil, scrap metal, tires, and batteries. The event also served as a collection point for more common recyclables like cardboard, shredded paper, and various plastics.
Zach Korthals, Director of Keep Longview Beautiful, characterized the event as a yearly "one-stop recycling drop-off." He highlighted the importance of ensuring that "recycled materials get to their proper streams the proper way," underscoring the organizers' commitment to effective waste management. This approach allows residents to properly dispose of a wide array of items in a single location, addressing common challenges associated with specialized recycling.
Among the participants was resident Angelica Guevara, who contributed over 50 books to the event. Guevara expressed her consistent commitment to recycling, stating, “I always do recycling. I think it’s really important.” She specifically sought out the event to donate her unwanted books, recognizing it as a valuable opportunity for their proper reuse or disposal. Her participation exemplified the community's engagement with the initiative, which aims to simplify the recycling process for many residents.
Doug Roberts, Store Manager for Interstate All Battery Center, noted that the event extends beyond a single-day collection. He explained its educational purpose, stating that organizers are "trying to create an environment where we can share recycling knowledge with people, showing them other opportunities that they can do it for the other 364 days of the year, kind of networking it with everybody.” This educational component seeks to empower residents with information on continuous recycling options, fostering a broader understanding of sustainable practices. Guevara echoed this sentiment, linking recycling to "teaching our young generations that will help them to keep the city and the planet in a better place for them when they become adults.”
The overarching goal, as expressed by organizers, is to help keep Longview beautiful throughout the year. By offering a convenient solution for difficult-to-recycle items and providing educational resources, the event aims to cultivate lasting recycling habits within the community. The success of this year's event has prompted plans for expansion in the future.
Organizers have announced that next year's Community Recycling Event will be larger. They intend to introduce new vendors and broaden the scope of accepted items to include paint and other garage-specific collections, further enhancing the event's utility for Longview residents.
