"Dear Evan Hansen" tells the story of high school senior Evan Hansen, whose life is profoundly altered when a letter, never intended to be read by anyone else, draws him into a family's grief following the loss of their son. This tragic circumstance unexpectedly offers Evan what the production describes as "the chance of a lifetime: to belong." The narrative explores how a seemingly simple lie can lead to complicated truths, crafting a coming-of-age story that addresses themes of grief, authenticity, and the universal struggle to find belonging in a contemporary world marked by instant connectivity alongside profound isolation. The musical further examines modern isolation, social anxiety, and the pursuit of human connection.
The musical enjoyed a six-year run on Broadway and was a smash hit with theater audiences, earning a Tony Award. The music and lyrics for "Dear Evan Hansen" were written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, with the book by Steven Levenson. The TJC Theatre Department presents this musical through a special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI).
The production will be directed by Jacob Davis, with Charles Praytor providing musical direction. Nathaniel Franklin of Troup, TX, serves as the stage manager, and Kenedee Fischer of Forney, TX, is the director’s assistant.
